In an uncompromising campaign against the mundane, I've spent almost two decades capturing motion & form - in and out of water. My source stems from the fluid energy of the natural world and the images are the result of a genuine sense of wonder with a craft where creative possibilities are boundless.
London is home but I'm is originally from Portugal where I was fortunate enough to grow up by the sea. I studied Biology, so as a visual artist, am mostly self-taught - from short stints at Central Saint Martins to the real learning through seeking out what I felt were some of the greatest image makers and learning as much as I could. I also spent time with lighting manufacturers in order to be able to create the images in my head.
Water drew me to photograph and early work consisted only of editorial work underwater. The eventual fusion of water & motion occurred naturally as a result of being involved with the Performing Arts scene in the UK. Drawn to the mysterious, I unconciously started to create work that pulled away from reality and was less about what I was looking at and more about what I felt - free from the restrictions of space or gravity. Unlike sound, light travels much more slowly in water. - This presents both challenges & creative opportunities to break new ground- either in the open ocean or in in custom-built underwater pools.
The Fine Art work is in public and private collections and has been recognized by juried international exhibitions and competitions. Collaborations with a range of commercial & private clients include, CHI & Partners, Y&R Branding, Orion Publishing, OneDrop Foundation, Lisbon Oceanarium, Crowwood Press, Egoista Magazine, Dance UK,, AD Dance Company, Random Dance, D&B Performing Arts, The English National Ballet, the Akram Khan Dance Company, Body of People & The Nureyev Medical Foundation. I'm fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Italian and conversational in Spanish.
